ABOUT PARK CITY

Park City wasn’t always a ski town. In the 1860s, prospectors in search of precious metals migrated to the area, which quickly became one of the most successful silver-mining regions in the United States. Although much of the original architectural charm from that early era is still intact, today’s Park City is best known for its abundant outdoor recreational opportunities, its friendly feel, its creative culture, and its close proximity to an international airport.

TRAVEL

Park City is extremely convenient to access by air. The Salt Lake City International Airport is a 40-minute drive from town and has direct daily flights to and from many US cities.

Getting Around

Understory is designed to be highly walkable. Nearly all of the workshop and event sites and hotels are on or right around Main Street. You’re welcome to rent a car, but we encourage you to take advantage of Park City’s abundant free and inexpensive transportation options, including High Valley Transit, a local bus and rideshare system; walking and biking paths all over town; e-bike and road bike rentals; and Uber/Lyft. Uber and public bus are the most cost-efficient options for transportation to and from the SLC airport. Private and hotel-provided shuttles are also available.

About Town

During the Understory conference, you’ll have countless choices about how to spend your free time. Go for a hike or a bike ride, shop on Main Street, check out some art, enjoy a concert at Deer Valley, or have a nice meal. Although lunch and dinner will be provided for you most days, Park City is also home to many excellent restaurants. Visit the Chamber of Commerce website for specific recommendations.

Accommodations

Old Town Park City has a variety of hotels, many reasonably priced, within walking distance of most of the conference sites. For proximity, we recommend Marriott’s MountainSide, Marriott’s Summit Watch, Main & Sky, the Washington School House Hotel, the Yarrow Park City, and Treasure Mountain Inn. If you’re in a more luxurious/adventurous mood, try the St. Regis or the Goldener Hirsch, both in Deer Valley. Park City is also full of Airbnb and VRBO rentals if you prefer to stay in a condo or house.
